GREYS HEAD COACH STEPS DOWN

The Owen Sound Greys attempt to bounce back after a tough season last year has got off to a rough start. Another bump in the road was felt tonight with the resignation of their coach.

Head coach Randy Gibbons stepped down after Sundays loss to Waterloo, due to personal reasons.

"I have some personal issues unrelated to the Greys," said Gibbons, "I wish the Greys the best, and I am sorry I won't be with them in what I know will be a very successful season."

Asst GM Steve McIver was taken a little off guard but confirms the decision. "After speaking with Randy, he decided that it is best for him to tender his resignation at this time" says McIver. "We appreciate all of Randy's efforts and contributions during his time with the team and wish him all the best"

The organization didnt have to look far or long for a replacement-  Greys Assistant Coach Rob Brown will take over as the Head Coach effective immediately. "Rob has the full support of myself, the entire Greys Management and just importantly, it is evident he has the respect and support of the players so the transition will be smooth".
The Greys return to action on Friday Sept 30th when they play host to the Guelph Hurricanes at the Bayshore; Game time is 7:30pm

Greys Fall To Golden Eagles

A three-goal first period deficit was too much for a youthful Owen Sound Greys squad as they dropped a 5-2 road decision to the Brantford Golden Eagles, Saturday.

Scoring in a losing cause for the Greys were Brandon Lamothe and Jordan Pettitt, with assists from Derek Haylow, Ryan Hudson, Tyler Crawford and rookie Mitch Wright, who has now collected a point in all four games this season.

Greys netminder Domingo Torrenueva made 41 saves in the loss, including 18 in the second period alone.

The Greys, who went 0 for 7 on the power play, were without their captain Kurtis MacDermid, who was an Owen Sound Attack call-up on Saturday afternoon versus the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.

Manny Paiva Reports on Bayshore Broadcasting the Greys 1st Win of the Season

On Your Mark, Get Set, GO it took the Greys until their third game of the 2011 regular season to get things fired up. With both game 1 and 2 being good competitive games the Greys wanted to share their 1st victory with hometown fans before heading out for a 4 game road trip and they did just that by defeating the Kitchener Dutchmen 7-3.

It was Highlander Night at the game and what better way to start the scoring for the Greys than a nice goal from Highlander Alumni Trevor Hughson assisted by Highlander line mate Doug Ardis. Hughson’s goal tied the game at 1-1 to end the first after former Grey Graham Kitching opened the scoring for Kitchener at the 6.48 mark.

After the Grey Bruce Highlanders Scandinave Minor PeeWee’s entertained the fans with a shoot out competition during the 1st intermission the 2nd period was action packed with penalties, fights and 2 more Owen Sound goals from the Kirkland Lake connection. Brandon Lamothe (Jordan Turbide) broke the tie at the 14 minute marked followed by a Powerplay marker from Jordan Cale (Lamothe, Turbide) to end the second leading 3-1.

Cale (Kurtis MacDermid, Kristopher Dobinson) added his 2nd powerplay goal to open the 3rd period scoring. The Greys quickly jumped to a 5-1 lead with Doug Ardis (Turbide, Tyler Crawford) added another powerplay goal. Kitchener returned the favour by adding 2 powerplay goals to bring the score to 5-3. It was a fast paced game and the Greys weren’t done Turbide (Lamothe, Mitch Wright) added his first of the season before Highlander Alumni Kurtis MacDermid (Hughson, Cooper Martin) finished the night with Lucky #7.

Nick Caldwell was strong in net to earn the win. Both Grey Bruce Highlander Scandinave Minor PeeWee goalies are from Owen Sound Lucas Pfeil & Malachi Albrecht made many great saves during the shoot out and with many Highlander Alumni part of the Greys lineup and getting on the scoresheet tonight we hope that these young players and many other Highlanders in attendance will someday be a part of the team.

Good Luck Boys as you hit the road we’ll see you back at the Bayshore on September 30th.
